A Study on the 100 Cases of the Colorectal Cancer


Abstract
From 1968 through 1980, a total of 100 cases of colorectal cancer were seen at the Department -of General Surgery, Chung-Ang University. Most of these cancer occurred in the 5th decades of life in male and 4th decades in female. Male to female ratio was 1.9:1. Mean age was 50.
40% of all patients came to hospital within 3 months history of illness. Erroneous diagnosis were 11%of all cases before present diagnosis.
Location of tumors was in the rectosimoid(66%), in the right colon (20%), in the left
colon(12%), and in the transverse colon(2%).
The most common symptoms of the right colon cancer were abdominal pain, palpable abdominal mass and weight loss. In the left colon cancer, the most common symptoms were abdominal pain, .bowel habit change and obstructive symptoms. Bowel habit change, bloody stools and abdominal pain were the most common symptoms in the rectal cancer.
The diagnostic accuracy of the colon cancer were 32% by sigmoidscopy and 94% by barium enema. And that of rectal cancer were 84% by digital examination, 97% by sigmoidscopy, 88% by barium enema.
Miles operation was the most common surgical procedure(23%).
The more longer was the period before admission, the worse the Duke¢¥s stage of the cancer. The incidence of postoperative complication was 34%, in which, the wound infection was the
most common complication(47%). Out of 14 bacterial cultures from the 20 cases of the wound infection, 10 shown the growth of E. coli(71. 4%).
The incidence of complication in mechanical bowel preparation group was 417o, in contrast to 23%% in mechanical bowel preparation with antibiotics group.
Mortality rate in associated disease group was 17%, but that of non associated disease group was 4%. Entire operative mortality rate was 10%.
